Young Latinos living in several of California's rural counties have the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancies in the state. Furthermore, only half of young, rural Latino adolescents ages 19-26 had health insurance and one in five between the ages 10-18 were covered, according to two recent briefs issued by California Adolescent Health Collaborative, a project of the Public Health Institute. Both reports — part of a series on Latino adolescents in rural and non-metropolitan areas — used 2009 California Health Interview Survey data. The reports' authors make several recommendations to improving Latino adolescent health, including crafting economic, social and health policies that target them while also increasing the focus on older Latino adolescents (ages 18-24). They also note that older adolescents experience higher rates of obesity and injury than younger Latinos but are not served by programs or public insurance programs that target school-age students.
